Weyula Primary School Sanitation & Health Project
Thursday, 02 September 2010 08:50

The quality of lives of 1,039 primary school children will be improved through this project being conducted in partnership with Tanzanian NGO MAMADO.  The project will improve the students' access to clean drinking water, safe (sanitary) toilets and will provide health education on the importance of hand washing.

Currently the school's rain water harvesting system (roof catchments) is not functioning.  The other water source, a tap connected to the town's water supply, is working but the water is contaminated and passing disease to children who use it.  Furthermore the toilet block is collapsing, has no doors, and has no water for students to wash their hands.

PROJECT OBJECTIVES

  • To facilitate a sustainable and safe water flow
  • To reduce the outbreak of water related diseases due to poor hygiene and sanitation practices
  • To improve sanitation in the school and promote hygiene education
  • To build the capacity of teachers and school committee in project management, operations & maintenance of water and sanitation facilities

PROJECT OUTPUTS

  • Rehabilitation of both rain water harvesting and clean water flow through taps at the school
  • School sanitation facilities renovated
  • School health clubs established and trained, pupils trained to take messages to parents
  • The school community made aware of preventing the spread of water and sanitation related diseases
  • The school board and teachers sustainably trained on the ongoing management of water and sanitation services

Fundraising target: US$8,811     Funds raised to date: US$8,811  (transfered 9th June 2010)

Status: Project in progress, expected completion date 31 January 2011.

HAT is committed to best practice project management, based on the Project Management Life Cycle (Initiation, Planning, Execution, and Closure).

We will only send money raised through fundraising events to Tanzania when we have negotiated and jointly signed a project agreement with our relevant Tanzanian partner NGO.  This helps ensure that projects are delivered within budget and that milestones are reported against.

HAT's commitment to high quality project management will stand the charity in good stead when we apply to the Australian Taxation Office for DGR status, which will mean that donations and other gifts to HAT will be tax-deductable for residents of Australia.

Wells Project, Kimbwi Village
Monday, 26 January 2009 09:06

Currently, the water needs of the 2149 villagers in Kimbwi Village are served by just three shallow wells, and the majority of villagers have to walk 3-4 kilometres each way to fetch water. This is a particular burden on women and girls, who are expected to take care of all household needs including looking after small children.

A community needs appraisal facilitated by our Tanzanian NGO partner HAPA found that the main development priority of this community is to increase villagers' access to water - specifically, to find funding for the construction of four medium wells. Funds raised through HAT activities will pay for geographical surveying, drilling boreholes, and purchasing and installing hand water pumps. Our NGO partner is currently renegotiating with the community over this project after some delay, to ensure the community's needs in 2010 and beyond will be met.

Fundraising target: US$26,486     Funds raised to date: US$17,597 (at 1 August 2010)
